Tucked into the High Rockies on the Western Slope of Colorado, Aspen is renowned for its thriving seasonal scene. Aspen is located approximately 200 miles southwest of Denver and 130 miles east of Grand Junction at the southeastern most end of the Roaring Fork Valley.

Originally known as “Ute City”, Aspen was a booming silver mining town with more than 12,000 people, 6 newspapers, 2 railroads, 4 schools, 3 banks, electric lights, a modern hospital, 2 theaters, opera house and a very small brothel district. In 1893 the Sherman Silver Act demonetized silver, which marked the decline as a mining town.

In 1880 the town was renamed to Aspen. After the decline of mining in the Town, another “gold mine” was discovered – snow. Thanks to Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke – who discovered a sleepy, post-Colorado Silver Boom city in the 1940’s – and his wife Elizabeth, a plan was developed to reinvent the area as a utopia. Their ambitious vision was achieved soon after and has since morphed into an arts and cultural epicenter of the world.

In 1946 the Aspen Skiing Corporation was founded and in 1950 it hosted the FIS World Championships, which confirmed Aspen’s status as an international resort.

Tucked in the upper end of the Roaring Fork Valley and surrounded by pristine wilderness, the area is home to many incredible hiking and biking trails. It’s Mother Nature’s playground at 8,000 feet; this area has something for everyone all year. Winter brings skiing on Aspen’s four area mountains, while summer blooms with hiking, biking, classical music concerts, theater in the park, lectures, and food and wine festivals.

When it comes to Aspen home for sale, there are properties for every taste and desire. Large single family homes can be found throughout the city and range from palatial estates to Victorian mining homes. Near Aspen, you can find world-class hiking and biking trails. Some of the largest single family homes can be found on Red Mountain and Starwood. Near Aspen, you can also find homes for sale in neighboring Snowmass.
